Gout was the bane of my life up until about 10 years ago.

Its one of those ailments that people seem to find funny - "been at the Port then?" Until somebody has experienced the pain of gout they have no idea that it is very very far from funny.

thanks sunflower. will have a look and hope it works, it can be extremely painful and a non-drug answer is always best
My husband takes allopurinol, has no probs whatever with them.
cut the booze....apply frozen pkt of peas
Alloprinal definately, you wont look back, see your doctor
I agree with the majority - Allopurinal from your gp is the way to go.
I had severe kidney stones (passed 35 of the buggers in total) caused by Gout.
My gp put me on the tablets and I've never looked back - no pain and no more stones forming. In my experience herbal and natural remedies DON'T work.

Its one of those ailments that people seem to find funny - "been at the Port then?" Until somebody has experienced the pain of gout they have no idea that it is very very far from funny.

Sometimes, during an attack, even the breeze from a closing door was painful.

In desperation I tried every quack remedy there was - including the quackiest of all, homeopathy. None worked.

I first got it at 26. After having two or three attacks a year for four years or so (and being presecribed endomethicin (sp?) I was referred to a consultant who did a load of tests and prescribed Allupurinol.

Apparently, I was pre-disposed to gout due to a defective enzyme which was probably inherited from my father - certainly I wasn't getting it due to my lifestyle.

Since I've been on Allupurinol, I haven't had any attacks. Fantastic drug.

My advice would be to ignore all the quack remedies and get yourself down the Drs and get on Allupurinol.

Cherries in any form are supposed to be good for gout. Apparently there's an amino acid in them which helps.
I am sorry to hang onto other ABer's coatails, but I have to agree that allopurinol is the way to go.
I had gout at age 70 (17 years ago) anf boy was it painful.
However, not much sympathy was forthcoming as too many people though it was a subject for humour!
My GP prescribed allopurinol and it worked wonders. He has left it on my surgery prescription, but I have never needed it again.

Look especially at the dietary hints,as this can help keep gout away, after medication has finished.
