I think tt means it will display old web sites that were designed to work with old versions of the browsers.

The default mode, for some reason, is "incompatibility mode"

IE8's standard mode is not campatible with a lot of web sites so it has a compatibility mode so the sites work, which you're now in.

Don't worry about being in compatibility mode, it just means more things will work properly.
