I am 33 single and have a decent paid job that bores me, a mortgage and a nice house. I am so utterly bored i feel like crying....I went to see a hypnotherapist/counsellor but didn't make me feel any better or more confident. All my friends have moved away or coupled up so i joined a couple of socialising groups and have tried hard to make new friends - and i have made a few but nothing amazing. I really want to jack it all in and go away for a year but am worried about going alone and more worried about what i will do for a job when i get back...there are not a lot of jobs in what i do. i then think i could find myself another career but i literally have no idea what to do - i don't have any passions....i know that only i can make myself better and turn it all around but i seriously don't know where to start. any ideas much appreciated. ps i am not being self pitying - i just wonder if there is more to life than this.

what about some volentary work abroad for 6 months ???
It sounds to me that if you're unhappy enough to visit a councellor then you should take the risk - or risk regretting it.

I know people that have gone around Australia and Asia on these package trips, and most people go on their own and consequently meet a lot of people. The lifestyle is completely different in these places and as a result, lots of the people that I know haven't come back!

I would go for it - what have you got to lose apart from your job? A lot of people are even losing those at the moment!
Get busy, maybe an educational course where you will meet bright interesting people.
have you any interests? look up evening classes for interest, just something to break the monotony of the daily routine.
One of my brothers sold his house when he was 40 then went travelling to countries where he met up with friends whom he'd met at different courses etc.

thanks everyone....yes i have been depressed to a dgree but i dont want to take drugs to make me better which is why i tried counselling. I do feel like everyone else is happier than me. i dont want to be a miserable moaner but sometimes its hard. i spend too much time alone because i can't find many people that i want to spend time with. I am doing up the house so i have options with renting it out or selling it. i dont have a pet - i considered getting a dog but until i decide what i am doing i don't think it would be fair. yes i fear that everyone else is getting on with their lives and settling down - i dont know what happened to me!
you're normal mini.
finish up the house then take 6 months or so whilst you think about selling or renting it
Good advice from lovely albaqwerty.......................and cheer up, you little monkey! :0)

thanks all and despite what i sound like i am happy most of the time - i just get down every so often!! i must admit vodka helps!
-- answer removed --
mini me dear, vodka like all alcohol is a depressant. it does depress you further so lay off it for a while.
get a warm jacket on and go for a walk, 1/2hour at first. Fresh air and the natural endorphones(?) from excercise will help getting natural body stuff flowing.
And lay off too much coffee too

what about takeing up an evening class after work?

headwreck (love the name btw) i understand depression is important and i dont think i am deeply depressed - my mood stems from a relationship breakdown a year ago that has left me on my own. I know i am not properly over this and only time ( and maybe a new bloke) will help me. I just need to make plans to move on with my life and my experience of counselling is that it doesnt help (and it was £75 a go) so i would rather use the money for something else. If i don't get anywhere then i will try again. I am not sure that it is a bad thing to want to go and see the world and do a bit of voluntary work - it might be 'running away' but it may also help me get 'me' back and come back stronger?

ps vodka is the sense of having a drink rather than being an alcoholic
you are in mourning over the loss of the relationship. Take heart mini, time heals (hate that expression)
Chin up hon
Have a rant on here occasionally, does wonders for the soul!

i know but its been a year - why can't i just get the hell over it!!
cos it's only been a year.
the length of the relationship doesn't equal the time of healing.
have a good cry once a week, a right good old wet the pillow one, let the sadness go.
(now I'm sounding daft)
Could I interest you in travelling a short distance to Eastern Europe to visit some children to see whether you might be interested in working with them on a short-term basis in a school? Teaching English, Sewing, Knitting, Art Work, crafts, and particularly specific educational talents - all are needed desperately. Just take a week as a way of dipping your toe in the water to see whether it appeals to you...then decide after that.

If this doesn't appeal, then may I suggest the VSO? You couldn't ask for a finer organisation AND you will still get paid...albeit a local salary. But it will help you and most of all you'll help someone else and gain valuable experience to place on your cv.

Just a thought I'd offer.

Best of luck

i am interested in that - however i cannot actually knit etc...but tell me more... I have looked on VSO and they very specific about their skills needs...which i don't have!!
