DON'T SHAVE IT. As you've said, it's only going to make it worse. I would go and see your doctor about it, as it sounds quite bad and there is probably something you can take to change your hormone balance? Have no idea what I'm talking about though, and as the site says, always seek medical advice before listening to what all us numpties have to say about anything!
If it's really thick, why don't you consider laser treatment? or you could use that dipalatory cream? if it's not thick but just dark...try bleaching it? dont shave!!!!
I wax mine, over time it thins and does not look so obvious.  Have you considered why.  MIne was considered due to either medication or polycystic ovaries.  Treat the cause too.
For all medical questions, we strongly advise you to seek professional advice from your doctor or healthcare professional.  Please do not rely on or wait for advice from Answerbank users.

I agree w/everyone else - don't shave it! and I speak from experience! I shaved the hair on my stomach when I was 12 ( am now 21) and the hair only grew in thicker and my clothes l rubbed against my stomach leaving bumps and and infecting the shafts of my hair and causing ingrown hairs (I know- sounds horrible!) In other words, it is better left to a doctor or professional medical advisor to take care of you if you have gone this far. Good luck!
