what symbolic purposeis served by having walton attepmt to travel to the north pole as opposed to some other unexplored region in the novel "frankenstein"

possibly to freeze him to death. good question, got me thinking and that always hurts!
Guess it is a representation of mans need to go to extremes, and where more extrmee than the northern most point of the world. Why did hilary climb mount everest - because it was there? Why did frankenstein build his monster, becasue it wasn't there. It a representation of the desire in man to conquer the world, and the north pole is the top of the world. Hope this helps.
