How is douching performed and is it safe?

Is it true a mild vinegar solution can be used for douching or should products specifically designed for this treatment be purchased?

I also know I'm very acidic down there at times. My partner once got serious burns on his tongue! I'm not sure I should be telling you all this. But I feel I know you all.
