Hi all I'm going to have my breast examined at the hospital this week as I have recently found a lump.

I know that the consultant is a man which will be quite uncomfortable but does there have to be someone else present when he does examine me as well?

Hi Sonak
When you go to the hospital, you will probably get a Mammogram. This is done by machine and the Radiologists are normally female.
If you see a Consultant, they have a Specialist Nurse present or a Female Doctor who will carry out the examination.
They are aware that some women feel awkwards, so they have females present at all times. Nothing at all to worry about.
Good Luck. xx

Thanks cruella - that's good to know and a relief!
My GP said that I might have to have an Ultra Scan because of my age (27), but as you mentioned it will be possible for me to have a Mammogram?
Hi Sonak,
You will probably have to have both but it is not too bad.
They do allow you dignity while having those tests.
I have just been through it all myself, so do not worry too much about it.
I required an operation and the first time I saw my Consultant was after the examinations, then after the operation.
Mine was pre-cancerous but they were removed.
I am still off work but hoping to return soon.
I am sure it will be a simple blocked duct or fibroid that you have, possibly even nothing.
Do not worry about it.
I am sure you will be fine.
All the best and keep me updated. xx
Hi sonak and cruella

I had to have both mammogram and ultrasound scans too. The lump was huge and I was terrified but it turns out its fibrocystic breast disease and nothing more serious.

Try not to worry.
Best wishes

Cruella thanks again I will definitely let you know what the outcome is. Hope you will recover very soon.

Weel thanks for your comments too, glad everything turned out Ok with you, I will try not to worry!
Hi
I had a lump a few years back (early 20s) and had it biopsied at the hospital. One of the drs I saw was male and there was no female present at the time so I don't think there has to be one.
It's all business to them though, and you'll probably never see them again!

Best of luck x
Good luck Sonak
