If its really bad then I think you may need to go to the dentist.

i have an appointment tommorow but just need summat for now
Ibuprofen. Thats quite strong.
Question Author
thanks for your help, ive been takin them all day but not doing much.
Awww, poor Ethanryan.... toothache is rotten but the pain is just telling you that something is wrong - definitely a visit to your dentist is in order. For the moment try some Ibuprofen (for some reason I find they work better than paracetamol for toothache) and make an appointment tomorrow ! Why suffer ?
Ooops, didn't see those other replies Ethanryan.... Have you got any sensodyne toothpaste - I find rubbing a little of that stuff onto the tooth helps ease the pain. Where is Mr XLA when you need him ?
Liquid Nurofen, stops it within 15 mins
Ouch - you have my sympathy. Rotten thing to have, innit?

If you're already dosed up on painkillers, then I suggest you have a good nip of something alcoholic - brandy, whiskey etc. and then go to bed and see if you can get some sleep.

Let us know how you get on tomorrow.

hi elvis do u mean the kids nurofen. ive never heard of liquid nurofen
I don't think you can get anything stronger over the counter.
Nope, the adults one
Oh I've heard Syndol is very good.
Taking paracetamol and ibuprofen together (assuming no medical contraindications e.g. allergy, other medicines etc..)
is an effective way to manage dental pain until you can see a dentist because the two combined have a synergistic effect., i.e. the pain relief is essentially amplified.
One way to take them is have paracetamol and then two hours later take ibuprofen and so on (being careful not to exceed the maximum dose, doing so has no greater therapeutic benefit and simply risks liver damage)
I have heard that clove oil is supposed to be good for tooth pain. Never tried it myself but it's available from chemists
Clove Oil does work but only for short periods of time.It doesn't taste very nice either. It may keep you going until your appointment though. Most chemists will stock it and it very cheap.
Ibuprofen works different;y to paracetamol in that it reduces swelling which is something that contributes to toothache. I would echo what others have said, you need to work with both brufen and paracetemol for the best result, but if you only take one type of painkiller - make sure it is brufen (ibuprofen).
Ethan - how'd you get on?
Question Author
still in pain, my appointment was ancelled today and is on wednesday, i have some clove oil which works for a while
mix cayenne pepper into a paste with a little water and rub it on the gum, it'll numb the gum and the tooth.
Oh poor ethanryan.... sod's law working there - an appointment you really needed asap and it gets cancelled... doh ! I would have gotten a tad angry at that. Whilst waiting for root canal treatment last year, I had really bad toothache and when the painkillers just didn't seem to work (except take the edge off of the agony) I used Anbesol - a local anaesthetic - which I bought at the pharmacists. I also found that rubbing a little sensodyne toothpaste into the gum around the offending tooth helped numb it a bit.
