sore ankles

Hi has any body got any answers as to why when any pressure is put on my ankles ie; when feeling for swelling, it is really really painfull, also abit higher up on my shins, how I have noticed this is during my check for a forth coming operation, when the doctor examined me he felt my anckles and it really hurt. Any ideas
