Why do people pay out loads of money to try and lose weight? I am a middle aged man. 2 years ago, I weighed 16 and a half stones. I now weigh 12 and a half stones. I worked out my own diet. A bit of thought will save you loads a money!

I can think of 2 reasons,10-alot of people need practical guidance in nutrition....they all too often haven't a clue in regards to calorie values, vitamin content, portion sizes, etc, etc. Slimming clubs work because of the group support, and having to pay a weekly fee demands a certain level of commitment.
10ClarionSt., I always thought of you as being female. Glad you cleared that one up ;-)
So did I LOL!!
Well done 10 clarion, Its a story like you have told that does inspire people to do it , and like lots of things it comes down to will power and determination to succeed, Thats a fab result Well done ....
Would agree with you to a certain extent, as I have managed to lose over 5 and a half stone in the last 12-15 months on my own.

Though I think many people find slimming clubs far more successful from the motivation they get from being with lots of people in the same position as they are. Also, if your progress is being monitored by someone else, they may be more determined to lose the weight to save any embarrassment come weigh-in time. As pastafreak also says, I think a lack of knowledge about food is a reason why many people opt for actual 'diet' products - slimfast etc. The trouble is, what then happens when you stop the milkshakes and start to eat?
could you tell us what you did - ta

I bet that will improve your golf as well, golf is a wondeful exercise, well done for keeping the motivation up, that is the hardest part.

thanks for your answer clarion st - I "feel" I have motivation this year myself as I genuinely have not looked at myself in a mirror for about 10 years. Just look at the face to put the make-up on (I am female) anyway was forced to look at wedding photos taken last August as I was standing-in mother of my nephew and couldn't believe where my stomach was. It was near to the ground with such a lovely outfit.

If you are interested will let you know if I am a success story.
by the way forgot to mention - "Congratulations on your loss"
