Can you still buy the old fashioned 'bags' that you fill with ice and they have a screw top, then you put it on you to help relieve pain?

All you need, miffy, is one of those Zip-Lok platic bags. Place the ice in, lock it, wrap it in a tea-towel and apply it to the sore area.
Best of all, A bag of frozen peas.
Google some online chemists, I'm sure you'll find one.
Postdogs got the answer, even medics recommend that, and of course, you just pop them in the freezer ready for next time.
there are also gel-filled pads that you keep in the freezer (they don't take up much space, almost flat) and apply when needed. You can't eat them the way you do peas, though
yo can also get these non-reusable ones which don't need to be kept in the fridge at all
