Am thinking of doing this, maybe at a charity shop but would like to hear your experiences of it.
Do they pay travelling expenses as I live a long way away from the nearest ones?

Hi Caveman,

I was a volunteer and its a very rewarding job in a number of ways, meeting new people, making new friends, learning new skills, its also a massive star on a cv for future jobs, as well as raising money for a good cause, I am now a manager at the shop where I was volunteering and we pay travelling expenses for our volunteers if they need it to get to us.

All I can say is go for it and if you dont like it in one shop go to another, its surprising how different each one is.

Good luck

Hi Caveman

Some organisations will pay expenses, others not. You will need to check. Can I suggest that you look on www.do-it.org.uk to find your local volunteering vacancies? This will also give you contact details for your local volunteer centre, who you can contact for advice & information on specific volunteering opportunities and general issues.

I work in a volunteer centre, and we have many volunteers who have had a great time volunteering in a charity shop, although of course it may not be for everyone.

Best of luck!
