Would you consider the name Dante a cringe worthy pretentious Christian name for a new born boy?

(for the uncultured, said Don Tay as in Dante's Inferno)

I;ve loved this name since hearing it on Waterloo Road
I suppose it all depends on the environment he's going to grow up in.

If for example he ends up on a Chavvy council estate, then yes, there's a good bet he's going to get his head kicked in at school on a regular basis.

If he grows up with Henry's, Alexanders, Sebastians and suchlike he'll be fine.
People tend to grow in to their names I've noticed.

That said... he may well be in for some playground bullying as I suspect most 5 years will not have read Dante's Inferno.
No, I'm currently reading the Count of Monte Cristo and have thus become quite taken with the name!
i think its fine, but as boo says if he's going to grow up on a chavvy coucil estate then..........
I actually like the name though I doubt I would call my own child it.

Im thinking if I have a son this time, I will call him Tarquin Farquoir......... what do we think? lol

I suspect most 50 year olds have not read Dante's Inferno, let alone 5 year olds!!!!
I know a little boy named Dante. It's not a name I'm dreadfully keen on though.x
Well I would say dahn-tay. But that was his nickname, his real name was Durante. I dont think there is anything pretentious or Christian about the name, its origins are Latin (much like my username) and means enduring.
Go the whole hog there Psychick- give him a double barrelled surname as well.

Farq is how posh people say fornication under consent of the king isn't it?
You may well be underestimating most 50 year olds then.

That said, I'm not 50 so I wouldn't like to guess.
lol BOO! If I gave him mine and partners surnames......... well thats another 4 syllables but if only you knew our surnames! lol
definately, what are the parents thinking, I took ages to come up with the names for my kids, sifting through every nuance of pi55 taking posibilty. He'll either become a right hard case or suicidal wreck.

Anyway the prize for stupid names has to go to young Shilo Pitt, has his dad never heard of spoonerisms?

Was his dad Friar Tuck??

Who says Don Tay????? I believe it to be Dan Tay and would only think it pretentious if people said Don Tay!

I like it, I know a few, they all have Italian parents but still its no different to calling your little girl Francesca.

Lol Boo, Sebastian, Alexander, Henry and Oliver were al toyed with for the three days it took us to name my youngest.
As with most teenagers: I'm sure he'll hate you forever!

I was never very good at fonetiks, but would say Dan is too sharp a sound. I like Octavius' Dahn, but my North London accent will probably say Dohn,
compared to the names I have heard recently for children dante sounds almost normal...
