Why don't they just each stick with their pre-marriage name or decide which one of their surnames both will use? Bonkers!

Why don't women stick to their names rather than changing as/when they marry ?

My son has a double-barrelled surname but thats because his dad and I are not married. I don't see it as pretentious or silly. More circumstantial in our case.

It's an unfortunate truth that some double-barrelled names look and sound far too unwieldy.

Both my Daughters have retained their maiden names along with their married ones as they had made a name for themselves already in the professional world.

In many day to day activities they use only one.

double-barrelled first names? Well. Anne-Marie is double-barrelled and Marianne isn't, but I can't see much difference myself.
