I have been advised I need hip surgery and the surgeon has suggested he might do a hip resurfacing operation in preference to a total hip replacement ,is there any one out there who has had the hip resurfacing operation and what were there experiences or views of this operation

thanks bigmamma
your welcome carlyon bay :-) All the best ,and let us know how you get on . xx
i have two resurfaced hips, one is nearly 4 years old, and the other is 10 months younger.
i had resurfacing rather than thr because of my young (51) age and because the bone was still in fairly good condition to be able to do it. there is less chance of dislocation as it is a larger 'ball and socket' than a thr, and when you are still young-ish and active, this is very important.
i was terrified before the op, never having had a general anaesthetic or any kind of operation, but it was fine. you probably know already that it takes a little longer to recover than a thr, due to it being non-cemented and having to have new bone grow into the prosthetic bits to secure it. so i was on crutches for 6 weeks, 2 sticks for another 6 weeks, and then one stick for 6 weeks. i was also told there is more blood loss during the operation due to it having to be opened up more to get access to do the necessary.
my advice would be ask, ask and ask again, until you're happy that you know what you're letting yourself in for. it's not a cure-all, but it's definately better than suffering considerable pain everyday, and having to walk with a stick.
good luck.

thanks ethandron I will certainly dicuss with my GP as the surgeon did indicate it was one or the other and I think i will go for thp I am 64!!!

i meant thr not thp
a thr isn't a cure-all either. at least with a resurfacing you can have a revision op done more easily in the future, if needs be. my advice to you would be to go with what your surgeon recommends. he obviously thinks you're a good candidate for a resurfacing, taking your age and state of bone into account. 64 is still young and i imagine you want to keep as active as possible. good luck with whatever you decide to do, and keep us posted.
p.s. i got almost to the top of snowdon about two months ago, and there are people with resurfaced hips doing far more active things than that too.
