As we hurtle along with breathtaking speed towards a nanny state, why should I be forced to wear a seat belt in my car.
I would insist my passengers wore them as I am responsible for their safety. I am also responsible for my own safety so why has the government taken this responsibility over.

I should think theyd be quite happy to allow you to not wear a seatbelt on the proviso that you paid for your own healthcare should you have an accident and be thrown from your car and were lucky enough to survive.
Pity the poor emergency service worker who has to extricate your lifeless battered body from the wreck
Same as Red.....

It's the resources that have to be used when you smash through the windscreen and land in the middle of the road on your head.

It also doesn't make nice viewing for your kids when they have to go and visit you in hospital....it also doesn't make nice viewing when 25 years later you still bare the scars.

Oh...and he still doesn't wear his bloody seat belt !!!!!!!!!!
How does it work with motorcyclists then? Why is it ok for them to be thrown from their vehicle but not a car driver? I never could understand that one.

I do pay for my own healthcare by way on nat. insurance contributions.
To ban things that may cause injury would result in an almost never ending list, potholing, mountaining, scuba diving, wind surfing, roller skating, walking along the pavement with new leather(slippery soles) shoes.
That's why they wear lethers and a crash helmet.

Doc - Those activities you mentioned don't happen on our roads.

I always wear a seat belt by choice . I am objecting to the goverment taking away my freedom of choice.
Question Author
Maybe not ummm but they clog up our hospital resources from time to time.
Question Author
conflicting evidence here, some serious injury has been sustained from wearing a belt.

my mum, dad, brother and sister-in-law were in a nasty car accident last year where the vehicle they were in rolled. The only injury that needed looking at in hospital was caused by a seatbelt.........

BUT would they all have been so lucky had they not been wearing them?

I think seat belts do save lives - I don't feel right driving without one. Injuries from wearing a seat belt are probably minor compared with not wearing one in most cases.

However, I do take the point about the nanny state.

Thanks cascarelli, that was my point.
Who in their right mind would drive a car with a child not secured. Some idiots will but there will always be idiots who will ignore the law anyway.
I am just concerned as to where this country is going.Too many rules, too little application of common sense.
It was stupid questions like this that made the introduction of airbags necessary.

Wear the belt ffs.
Why should ''you'' be forced to wear a seat belt in your car.

Give me a good reason why you should'nt wear a seat belt then, and how can you ''insist'' that your passengers wear a seat belt ?
What if they refuse then, will you still give them a lift, i suspect not as you rightly pointed out, its your responsibility
to make sure they are wearing seat belts.

Ps, what type of insurance would you think you would pay if you told your insurance company that you were refusing to wear your seatbelt, you would pay nothing because no insurance company would agree to this, therefore that would make you a driver with no insurance which in turn means no car tax, now whos at risk?????

And another thing, and i don't care if i upset some people.

The majority of asians drive around with there children not seat belted up, before anyone starts moaning at this, do me a favour and check what i said out for 2/3 days before responding.

Oh, and my evidence is my own eyes.

It was a good sensible question cockney-si, unlike your childish response. Presumably you are a southerner, enough said.

I do wear a seat belt, my objection is being told to do so. A bit like the Govt telling me to wipe my bum after a poo.
laurence, i dont know about aisans as there arent many in my neck of woods but ive seen parents in front passenger seats with toddlers waving out of windows whilst climbing on their lap. Sadly the car flew past me at over 40mph (in a 30mph) as i was sat at a junction so i had no chance to take their number or id have reported it immediately.
No one likes being told what to do in life full stop, its common sense most of the time tho ie wipe your bum after a poo, preferably with toilet paper!
the government dont just tell you, they tell the whole country. The reason being that there are a lot of idiots out there who think no harm will come to them if they dont wear belts and as such we all have to be treated as simpletons and told what to do.
It doesnt bother me at all, i wear it so why do you get annoyed? What if your children decide not to wear a belt when they are older and driving? will you support them as its their freedom of choice?
