I have a high level of the bad cholesterol apparently but I don't eat meat, or pastry,. well the odd greggs pasty every few months, and I don't eat anything full fat. The nurse gave me a booklet but I don't seem to be a typical case as i do eat sensibly and well. What could have caused this? i am abit upset as I didn't expect it to be so bad.

Hi Dot. Im the same and so is my sister-in-law, sometimes it can be genetic, I have to take statins and watch what I eat (I cheat a lot tho) have you been given any medication? My cholestrol started off at 8.5 now its down to 4.8 also I take omega 3.
I have 3 siblings on statins and my late mother was . I have had my bloods taken as I had a minor stroke the other week , so it may well run in families . I will soon find out if I have a high one too although I don't eat fatty or takeaway foods at all.
Hi dot
there is something in the humble tomato that fights bad cholesterol.
if you follow a sensible diet, and don't eat a lot of saturated fat go and see your doctor to put you on statins. It sounds as if you are one of these people who inherit bad cholesterol, have you had your liver checked, as this produces bad cholestrol.
Hello dot, I know they go on about all the right things to eat but I really believe a lot of these things are often hereditary,so all you can do is what you are doing, eating a sensible diet, is there history of any form of heart disease in the family ? good luck with it dot, i am sure they can get it down for you, hope I haven't upset you by putting that.
Hi dotty...

Did you say you had been treated for underactive thyroid? I know it seems simple, and it has probably already been checked...but have they re checked your thyroid function?

I had high cholesterol before the GP got my medication dosage high enough. Just a thought.. x
are you post menopausal dot ?
Go and get your oats dotty. I have heard porridge is also a good combatant for bad cholesterol.
Yes..I have to eat that every morning, Wardy. Unfortunately I am not allowed the cream & sugar to go on it which would make it yummy :o(
Not even fat free milk and a little organis honey pippster?
I do partake in the honey, Captain. It makes the oats go down a little easier. However not as well as it did in the good old days when I could have jersey milk.
Hi dot,
I was diagnosed with a reading of 11.2 13 years ago. I eat fairly sensibly and statins never made one bit of difference to me. It was mostly down to Genetics.
My Consultant prescribed drugs from the lipantil group. Two differnent types. My reading is now at 4.9. So, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Do not worry too much about it and go back and see your GP. They can help.
