i'll try and keep it short, i've been up for the past hour and a half and im the kind of person that really needs a goodnight's sleep. the neighbours have been watching sport and generally been loud for the past couple of hours and i don't think its gonna stop now. (not that i would be able to get back to sleep). truth is i'm too scared to phone police. they were playing rave music about 5 in the morning about a month ago and someone else phoned the police after an hour of it. but they're the kind of family that would give you funny looks in the street if they thought it was you that phoned the police. i can't talk to them about it. could i speak to the police about it for advice, as i don't want to phone when its a 999 call as it would be obvious who made the call. (this is not every night, and i do understand that... but it does seem to becoming quite frequent now) i'm just tired and don't know what to do

Hotpink, I had exactly the same problem and I too was scared to call the police as well. Eventually it got so bad that I though f**K it. The police did come out and it stopped for a while then as usual started up again. Finally I contacted the local council's environmental Health department who came out and measured the noise. They stated it was excessive and sent them a letter. I should add that it was not just me complaining, I lived in an apartment complex at the time andall the surrounding neighbours felt the same.

Fortunately for me, these people only rented the flat and when the landlord found out they were evicted. Do these people rent or do they own it?

I completely sympathise with your situation as I was driven to distraction.

they own it. thing is they've had a few family problems and the mother has walked out which leaves a house full of men with no women to put them in their place! i don't want to feel scared in my own home and i'm worried that as we're planning a baby that it will cause me stress. do the environmental health people come out in the middle of the night if you phone them up? i'm so annoyed that my husband can sleep through it!!!! i've been up now since 4.30.
Not sure where you are, but my experience was in Nothern Ireland. The environmental health came out at around 9.30pm (20 mins after I called them!) but they also stated that normally the noise has to be excessive after 11pm so yes they will definitely come out.

Is there no way you could have a word with them? Difficult I know but it could save a lot of disharomony. Failing that, just keep ringing the EH people, they are public servants after all and that is their job!

The police came out to these people several times (they were fighting in the courtyard, F-ing and blinding, you name it), but because it was an apartment complex the neighbours didn't know who had reported them. Not so easy to remain anonymous when you are in the house next door.

Good Luck

hotpink - I also had a similar problem with my neighbours but I also live in an apartment so it wasn't just me that was complaining.
The police weren't interested at all and wouldn't even come out!
The environmental health where I live will only come out on a Friday or Saturday night anytime after 9pm. However, they will record any complaints of loud noise during the week and send letters to the appropriate people.
They came out to me on several occasions and recorded excessive noise levels from my neighbours. Letters were exchanged and the noise finally stopped.
I sympathise with you because I know exactly how you feel. You don't have to put up with it though, report them!
I pity you. I had the same problem but my neighbours revved bikes and buggy's and actually drilled holes in the party wall at 1am. After months of aggro and discos next door I called the police. After that my problems started. Matey next door came round with his brother and threatened me and then they got louder from midnight to about 5am. Then they lit bonfires when my washing was out (never a bonfire when I had no washing out drying) then they lit barbies in the summer with just a kipper on it (left to burn) so I had to keep all my windows shut because of the smell. Neighbours knew and moaned about them and the noise but did not want to get involved unless they had trouble themselves. When I complained to the police againmatey and brother called on me at eleven o'clock one night and beat me up. I reported it to the police who visited them and they said "us? oh we love the guy next door, we men all stick together" - I had to move home in the end. As soon as the for sale sign went up the neighbours filled their front garden with junk and everytime a car with viewers called then the noise from the neighbours increased. I finally sold my home at 50K less the market value. I pity your problems but start weight training and stick up for yourself like I am learning to do.
O'Reilly, what a shower of complete low life barstewards!

I would have been tempted to 'hire some individuals' to have a word in their shell like! Not that I would condone such action but when pushed to those limits anything is possible!
Hi Hotpink!
I hope you got back to sleep this morning. These people are just so 8loody inconsiderate! I wouldn't be put off by calling the police. I wouldn't advise dialling 999 though as it's not really an emergency. Dial your local number and explain the situation but clearly state that you want to remain anonymous and do not want a visit and there is no reason why your neighbours should ever find out it was you who called. Also bear in mind that you may not get an immediate response as an emergency could be happening somewhere else. Do call your local council though and report it and get the complaints procedure rolling.
Good luck, I hope the situation improves for you. x
