When I was young and had earache, my mum would pour olive oil in my ears and tthen stuff a piece of cotton wool in to stop the oil dribbling out. Did anyone else have this done to them and can anyone tell me WHY parents did it?

To loosen earwax ...
Question Author
No, it wasn't earwax...
The GP said I needed my tonsils & adenoids out but still I had the oil poured in my lugs...not that it ever did any good!
I am currently waiting to have my ears syringed, in the meantime I have been advised to do the above, as Abdul says to loosen the earwax.

olive oil does loosen ear wax . when you have ear ache you should not put anything in the ear , i was told
My mother did this to me and I ended up with a mastoid.
i remember this getting done to me, but it olive oil was warmed.

no idea what good it did tho!
i think it was merely to soothe.

the warmth would soothe but also to make you feel like you are being made better by a special potion
yes, my mum used to warm it first before pouring it in my ears.
