Does anyone know of a verse dedicated to the Merchant Navy? My sister aged 69 recall's just a few word's...."And should anyone hinder our coming you'll starve". Sis says it was a wartime verse? Any help appreciated. Daisy.
Send out all your warships to watch our big waters
That no one may stop us from bringing you food.
For the bread that you eat and biscuits you nibble
The sweets that you suck and the joints that you carve
They are all brought to you daily by all of us Steamers
And if anyone hinders our coming, you'll starve.
My uncle was in the Merchant Navy, and I was very impressed by their care of ex sailors. When he died there wasn't many at his funeral most his friends had gone before him, but there was an very smart full uniform young seaman standing proud and passionate amongst us.
Oh that was a lovely gesture on that sailor's part curiosity. Many thought the Merchant Navy never got the recognition they deserved and were named "The forgotten force" but delighted to say there's been "A Merchant Seaman's Day" on September 5th for the past 6 years..YAY.
