I'm guessing he meant lymph nodes which play a part in the body's defence system. These are also found in your armpit. They can swell in illness or be a sign of other conditions.

Any lump like this should be checked out asap, I'd get him to the doctors as soon as you can.

It may be the same thing and put your mind at rest but best to get it checked out.

This may help with some further information...

http://www.medhelp.org/forums/Maternal/message s/41063.html I have put you the link to give a bit of reassurance. The lymph system is right around our bodies. If you are still worried take him back to the doctor.
You also have lymph nodes (as is their correct terminology) under the armpit. If your son has swollen lymphnodes, then this is a sign that his body is trying hard to fight some kind of infection. Lymphnodes collect and destroy the 'rubbish' collected by the lymphatic system. They are swollen because they cannot cope with the amount of 'rubbish' they are trying to filter. I think you should take your son back to the Dr and express concern.
How old is son? could he fall into the glandular fever age prone group ... mid teens. They some times call it the kissing disease ...
