i dont think a trouser suit would be really suitable for a black tie affair.
black tie sounds formal to me, which usually means full length dresses, not above the knee
Hmmm, hi silverdaler. Curly-milf is right. It means an all in 1 dress that goes below the knee, and it should be a smart one...
its what its says, Black tie = Dickie bow{formal dinner suit} and evening dress would be normally a full length dress
Very glam and trendy ladies have got away with wearing a white tux, without the shirt.

But they are usually fabulously rich, famous and sensational looking.

But a full length dress is better.
You can get some very elegant and glamourous trouser suits, in lovely satins, silks and velvets, with flowing lines, which would be quite suitable. I never wear dresses (not even long ones), and that's what I would wear to such a 'do'.
I would think that for most formal functions these days ladies could get away with some really luxurious silky or velvety trouser suits (Cherie Blair often does, although not everybody would want to pick her as a role model !). But if Royalty are in attendance, definitely go by the book and wear a long dress !
so do we have to wear a dress if royalty are present ?
If it says evening dress, then I guess that's what it means. Apart from the fact that there is no such as a lass looking good in pants,
I have worn trousers with a nice evening type blouse before . I don't think it makes much difference. If you are not comfortable in a dress then I wouldn't wear one.
wear what you will feel comfortable in, don't let anyone tell you what to wear!
