can anyone give me any advice on what to do for a 2 stone overweight 13-16 year old please. diets or ways to lose weight or anything

Hi x i just lost 3 stone using paul mckennas i will make you thin book... Its fab!!!! Honestly, from a real success story, it works! Sounds insane at first, eat what u want, but trust me it works, just takes a little longer, i took 9 months! but it stayed off now 6 months later, and you no longer think about food constantly!! Good luck x
would they be interested in taking up any sport?

hmm im not sure, theyre not into sport in general but you never know
i lost two stone after having my little one by starting to eat healthily. cut out crisps and chocs :( swapped them for fruit and almonds (suprisingly tasty!) started eating things like salmon , lean meats, rice, steamed veg ( yes i actually bought a steamer!) and stopped drinking my fav...diet coke.. swapped it for sugar free squash. never thought i would stick to it but i did and now im a stone lighter than before i got pregnant! started walking more too x

Have a chat with them and see if there's any physical activity they'd really enjoy, something like dancing, martial arts, horseriding or joining a team such as netball, basketball or football or even something like RAF/Army cadets, water sports and outdoor pursuits - there's so much out there. I know where I grew up the local authority ran taster sessions in the school holidays.

If you bought them a bike would they go out cycling?

It will make getting out and active fun and enjoyable and may lead to a healthier alternative in general.

Why not get the family involved, go out for walks or bikerides, go swimming together, find out about charity fun runs or swimathons and train together to raise money for charity, maybe something close to home they can identify with.

Have you or anyone else you know have a dog they could take some responsibility in walking?

Set them up with a good healthy breakfast so they won't get hungry early and be tempted to snack on un healthy stuff or give them healthy snacks to take out with them so they may tuck into them in they're hungry rather than going to get crisps and chocolate and such.

Try and make healthier alternatives to their favourites such as fresh fish and lots of fresh peas and such with low fat oven chips. Make little changes over time like using frylite instead of oil, buy a george forman gril for meats and such, changing to skimmed milk and cutting down sugar in their drinks gradually.

Introduce more fruit and veg gradually, cook fresh rather than processed food esp microwave meals, and cut way down on any fizzy drinks and such. Don't have unhealthy snacks in the house but have lots of healthier alternatives available such as fresh fruit juices and fruit.

Maybe buy a blender and have some fun making some different fruit smoothies and healthy soups in them, get a feel for what they like. Maybe get
Don't force them, try and make it something they want to do and find fun are get excited about as it's more likely to have lasting results and better for the child mentally that getting negative body issues.

Overweight children can really suffer pyschologically so anything you can do to encourage him/her to look better will help their self esteem and confidence enormously. But start with a healthy diet - no crisps, chocolate, etc. Porridge, a smoothie or wholemeal toast for breakfast, and if it's a packed lunch include lots of fruit. Also don't serve any pre-prepared meals or fizzy drinks that are high in sugar. . Cook everything from scratch and reduce fatty foods like cheese, bacon and sausages. Fish and chicken are good.
If your child is not keen on sport, buy them a pedometer for Christmas and encourage them to try and walk at least 10,000 paces a day. A pedometer will keep a record of their paces and a low daily count will helpfully act as a motivator. And serve all meals on smaller plates. This will have the effect of making smaller portions look less miserly.
