What is the most effective way of cleaning a foundation sponge?

I put mine in the wash , but I have discovered that you have to put it in on its own, so now I tend to just buy another cheap one instead. :)

I've recently found that a blob of straightforward shampoo in the wash basin works a treat - cleans all makeup brushes and sponges easily.

Washing up liquid will do for foundation sponges, but for future reference, the Body Shop make a 'Cosmetics and Brush Cleaning Fluid' which conditions brushes as well as cleaning them - costs about �3, and if you've got money to burn, MAC do a cleaning fluid for �11
