My NHS crown at the back of my mouth is gold as they are cheaper according to my dentist than the white ones can't remember what it cost but not 350
Hi Hasni, I had a while crown done by my NHS dentist and it was free! I too am allergic to anything with nickel. As far as I know, you can have the back teeth done this way too but you will have to pay for them, Between 40 and 60 I am told. Oh and ... time to change your dentist me thinks!!! Mind you, with the recent changes that have been made, this may no longer be the case, but ask another dentist for a second opinion. Good Luck!
Hang on, if you have an allergy to nickel, and can prove it, why can't you have an alternative on the NHS?

If you had an allergy to penecillin, would they insist on you having that instead of an alternate antibiotic?

I'd argue this point with the dentist or the next level up in the NHS.
And 350 per crown is rather excessive, yes.
If you pay for your NHS treatment then the maximum charge on the NHS is band 3 and is 189 (this is for anything involving lab. work e.g. crowns).
In theory an alternative material should be available, however the NHS remit strictly speaking is too make you dentally fit and that wouldn't always cover having crown work on the NHS. Unfortunatley that would might mean having a private crown. Crowns are expensive not usually 350 however but then there are not usually Nickel free (makes the lab. bills much higher!!), you may be able to find a cheaper quote however.
Oh and whilst 350 for any crown might be on the expensive side, some specialist restorative dentists charge 600
