is it dangerous to mix painkillers with alcohol?

it can be dangerous potentially to mix alcohol with any drug/medication,because alcohol exacerbates any effect of the drug.

Recently I had a new hip and had to take painkillers,but I still wanted to drink and socialise, The chemist told me that if I persisted to drink , and take pain killing drugs it would eventually effect my liver leading to serious medical problems.So I gave up the painkillers and suffered in silence, but at least I was still able to drink alcohol
