Why do so many people find clowns creepy? If they really are evil then why are used as symbols of fun for kids? Don't get me wrong, if 'IT' came into my house at night wielding a sharp knife I probably wouldn't find him cute or funny. But all the others are alright aren't they?

And after all...

I also find them scary, and I think it stems from the stuff we watched when kids, relating to circuses and 'freak' shows. There's the element of someone being behind a mask; of someone playing tricks on you; of not being what they seem; of having horrible laughs. I always hated them, and my sister was petrified of Andy Pandy. Lots of things people are scared of have something to do with circuses. I'm scared of these too.
I find clowns have been given a bad press over the years, it is a Hollywood thing I believe, Alfred Hitchcock may have been a culprit, i know there is a film with Henry Fonda that I don't like watching because of his horrible black face make-up. Then there is that clown -in -the -rocking -chair -sitting in the corner film, that is creapy.
They are sooooooooo creepy ! I hate clowns so much. Who knows what lurks behind that painted face and as a kid , I always wondered what hideous mutated feet were hidden under those big shoes. The worst ones for me are porcelain clowns. Arrrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhh !!! Both fears combined. Their hideous little eyes just seem to follow you everywhere , there's no escape. I'm away to hide under my duvet.
I have never been a scary clown I promise as I dont make up
It's the 'mask' thing..and the fact that a clown is traditionally a sad character putting on a happy face.

people have been freaked out by clowns for many years ~ although I would blame Pennywise for the more recent cases of Coulrophobia! of course, there is a difference between a real phobia & just being scared sh1tless by a freaky circus clown ;o)
its only some very old fashioned clowns like the old jack in the box ones that are creepy and I think this stems from horror films being made of them. More up to date ones dont bother me I mean who would be scared of Ronald McDonald
I know a guy called Ash from Marlow who lives with one!
I know exactly what you mean

Pure evil!
I dont like clowns either though I have no idea why. They just seem creepy as hell.
do you remember the horrible Pierrot? hehe!
I have heard of a few people scared of Ronald McDonald! in fact, they are freaked by any sort of clown..even my lifesize clown ragdoll called Charlie.

The fact that he changes his sitting position during the night probably doesn't help.

Can't be me then, Smithers, 'cos I don't live in Marlow anymore so.... :ob
I just find dolls in general quite creepy! Especially ventriliquist ones! They scare the cr@p out of me! They are alive you know!!
My mates kids were watching Dr Who.. the one with the girl in the fireplace and there are these clockwork dolls in it with black holes for eyes! Scared the cr@p out of me!
I collect dolls, so they don't bother me in general..although I have seen some freaky ass dolls in my time!

Champers ~ the last one gets a 10, most definately. Closely followed by number 2 *oh bejesus*. The others are cute :o)
how can you sleep at night pippa? have you never seen Chucky?
I have two Chucky sized dolls, stevie..they are girls and not demented like Chucky.

Mind you they do have quite insane looking grins. Luckily they stand up on top of the wardrobe nowadays, since the time I woke up & found one staring at me.

That's enough doll talk!

Pippa, I think you are seriously disturbed. You're freaking me out! And scaring me!!
Why thank you Champers :o)

Seriously, I am not disturbed..I just wasn't allowed to express myself through play as a youngster. I went into therapy after my mum gave my doll to the scouts jumble sale. Since then I have gone into overdrive & I force my mother to say hello to my dolls whenever she visits!
For me it wasn't so much the clown from IT but the scene from Poltergeist where the clown pops out from under the boy's bed. No matter how many times i see the film, it still makes me jump.
Nasty little *******, should be banned.
