I guess it depends on your pain threshold. I would say it's uncomfortable but it doesn't hurt - it's kinda like someone getting a pin and scratching your skin with it but it feels deeper (doesn't hurt that much more) so tend to feel wierd rather than hurt - like they're scratching you from the inside rather than the outside.

Certain places hurt more than others - boney places hurt a lot more, ie. spine, ankle, top of foot, etc.

I've got 4 tattoos and none of them hurt that much but make sure it is something you want for life and try and imagine yourself with it when you're 80 - will you still want it in the place you're thinking of having it?

All mine represent something or someone in my life so are quite special to me.

I have one, a small chinese symbol on my shoulder, i really like it , it only took about 5 minutes to do and just felt like a burning feeling, nothing too bad
my boyfriend at the time had one done around his arm - took about 4 hours and looked so painful!! he was pale by the time it was finished!!

i would like to get another small one, perhaps on my back , i like those aswell missjef

its apparently more painful if done on ankles/ wrists , place where there is thinner skin?

yeah everyone seems to say that it feels like being scratched with a pin.

and the thing about you being with it for life is why i would never get really big tattoos, only a small one somewhere like my back maybe, so i could cover it up i wanted.

thanks for your answer :-)
I dont mind subtle piercings (i have my ears and navel done) but hate people with loads on their faces. I also think tattoos look cheap on women, especially on their arms and legs and shoulders

wickedgirl2 - i like the chinese symbol ones to, but i think i would rather have a tribal pattern on my lower back, i dont think i would ever get one done right round my arm!! i wouldnt be able to cope having it done for 4 hours!! having said that im not sure how long the tribal ones take!
I've got a butterfly on the inside of my ankle! i love it but its not to everyone's taste i've had some say it looks like a leaf or a flower etc! pah! it did hurt but thats probably coz i hate needles pain etc and it was in one of the worst places due to it not being fleshy! good luck whatever you do get but think about it for a long time thats my only regret! i did it on the spur of the moment!

chazza - i kind of see what you mean about women looking cheap, as sometimes it's not really a good look!
but did you mean that you hate the people who have piercings all over their face, or just the piercings? i dont se e how you can hate somebody just because they have certain piercings.

caz21 - thanks, i quite like the look of ankle tattoos, but i dont think i would like the pain! im sure its fearne cotton whose got a really nice star pattern round her ankle which is really pretty but i bet it hurt!
i have a unicorn tattoo on my shoulder (black shaded and evil looking)and its doesnt look cheap.my reason for it is that ive had horses all my life and i had it in memory of my best horse i ever owned.
im not keen on tattoos that look like"they were done cos they wanted one" sort of thing, and just got a tattoo for the sake of it.
i agree with Chazza - i think that alot of tattoos can look really cheap and nasty
i would like one more small one done but that would be it
I have a chinese symbol on my lower back/spine. It didn't hurt too bad and it really does just feel like your being scratched. Mine means younger sister - my sis has one in the same place meaning elder sister. I love it cos it has so much meaning to us and i love her to bits.
Oh and I also have my ears and belly button pierced. Love my belly button one too!!
I didnt mean I hated the actual people, I just dislike facial piercings!
ive had three tattoos and have to say that that the one on my lower back hurt the most as its right on the spine, flesh areas hurt less apparently.
i have 3 small ones. on my shoulder, by my belly button and one on my back. the one on my back was definately the most painful and the one on my shoulder the least painful. i designed my tattoos myself so i know that no one else has what i've got. whatever u decide i hope it doesn't hurt 2 much!! xXx

i have a tattoo on the back of my neck...and i love it. it took about 20 minutes to do...and it smarts, but it's not unbearable....as flipflop said...more uncomfortable really...and you can always zone out while yo're being inked.

I'm sure you've been told this many times but, for goodness sake, be absolutely sure that 1) you want a tattoo (piercings can always be removed) and 2) you're sure of the design you want. (i decided on mine and looked for another 2 months for something else...i kept coming back to the original one i liked.)

Remember..a tattoo is with you for life...you need to love it that long.

I know tattoos can be changed and covered up with others...but it's better getting it right first time.

and it's up to you where you get it..it's not necessarily the place you get it...but the person who has it that makes it look good or not.

good luck with whatever tattoo or piecing you decide.

:o)

Sorry I don't like tattoos or facial piercings at all. I have my ears pierced and I quite like the look of one small sparkly stone in the side of the nose, but other than that I don't like them. I think it's a fashion thing that everyone will hate in twenty years time. It's bad enough looking back at photos of me with flares and platform shoes and tank tops and feather cut way back in the 70's, but at least photos are the only reminders I have of those fashions, I'm not left with a permanent feather cut or platform shoes permanently welded onto my feet!
I couldn't have put it better myself spudqueen!
