I have been told that you should wait a couple of hours after you have eaten, before you exercise.

Is this true? and Why?

you could get severe stomach cramp and indigestion from working out on a full belly.
after you have eaten the body moves blood to the digestive system thus reducing the blood available for the muscles - when you excerise straight after a meal the body will be forced to reject the food to give you the energy to exercise
Yes its true you should wait for your food to settle. Tip- if you exercise before you eat a meal it will help with speedening up your metabolism
