If the images that paedophiles download are of abused children, should the government not try and track down these kids and protect them as well as punishing the voyeurs after a lot of damage has been done? Are there hundreds of children out there being abused and photographed? Or are these photos doctored, or actually of older people made to look younger?

Be in no doubt what so ever that the images of children being sexually abused and tortured are real, and no there are not hundreds of children out there ubjected to this dreadful abuse, there are hundreds of thousands of them! The difficulty with locating these children is the same as finding the perpetrators of the abuse - they show few outward signs of their situation, and are virtually impossible to trace. These poor children are often abused by family members, or family friends, and bribed or terrified into silence. This colusion makes the tracing of anyone invloved next to impossible. The recent spate of media interest is caused only by the massive numbers who hae used creit cards to buy material off the net -imagine how many more are simply passed around closed circles with no outside involvement at all. The notion that this is older people made to look younger is idealistic - why would anyone bother with so much of the 'real thing' available? It is a sad world we live in.
"It is a sad world we live in." Alternatively, it is a wonderful world we live in, but bad things will sometimes occur amongst a species capable of free and independant thought. The thing that I find sad is that this pessimistic terminology and outlook appear so prevalent among Answerbank users. Nevertheless, it is what I have come to expect from this site. I agree with and support Andy's other comments.
Do you think the abused children would concur with Andy Hughes view of the world on this subject or with yours roger saurus? For some of us life is great but not for everyone and to borrow a phrase from a great song, "If one of us is chained, none of us are free". The quality of all our lives is reduced when there are so many cruel people in the world and so many people willing to support their "work" with their credit card donations. If the internet is a means of flushing them out, well and good. This is not meant as a criticism of your viewpoint, but not everything in the world is good.
I was clearly not referring to this particular example, just the rather matter-of-fact conclusion of Andy's that this is a 'sad world'. No it isn't. Some people have sad lives of course, but many have very happy lives and would consider this a wonderful world, a viewpoint which seems increasingly overlooked in the media and on this site. Once again we have been reminded of the cruel people in the world (fine, that is what the question was about), but there never seems to be any mention of those who improve our world and our lives, the doctors and nurses, the police, the charity workers, those people who are just kind hearted to others. This balance to the argument seems to evade the thoughts of so many answerbankers, at least when they are posting replies. Of course not everything in the world is good. It never has been and is unlikely to ever be. That's part of real life. But not everything is bad either, certainly not as bad as some would like us to believe. I used to suffer from clinical depression and God only knows what I would have gone through if my outlook on life was as bleak as what many other people's seems to be. If anything, hearing of the plight of the children referred to in the original question should allow you all to apprieciate your lives all the more and understand how great your lives are.
AB'ers are not a different breed of people. We are a fair representation of western perception. Most people do say 'not so bad' instead of 'good' and ok instead of 'fine' It's the way of the world; [our half anyway]. But yes it would be lovely for us all to be more positive and raise the public consciousness to the glamour and goodness. So this is my prayer or pan that it be so. Miracles happen. Let's all 'Think Smile' and make the sun shine. If you think this answer is cheesy - say cheese!

I dont think my question is being answered any more, you all seem to be getting off the subject and onto whether or not the world is a wonderful place. If you want to have a debate on this, why not start your own string?
fair point 5029, so to return to your question, the UK government (the only one which I'm qualified to comment on), in the form of all its services designed to support young people, does try and track these young people and help them. Teachers are trained to look for signs of abuse as are health workers, police and many others. Today, in the course of my work, I had contact with a young woman who was so badly abused as a child that she has no idea of how to be a mum to her own child. Through a programme of support involving social workers and our special project workers we are trying to help her organise her life. She is getting help with accommodation, finance and budgeting, and childcare skills. We are putting in place a work placement in a women's centre where she will be helping in the office and learning new skills. The other workers there will carefully help her to learn how to parent a child and deal with her problems, which include severe depression. She is receiving medical treatment for this. We hope that she and her child will have a better life.Yes, there are hundreds of children and adults who have suffered in this way, I meet a small proportion of them in my working life. The cost to the children and to society is incalculable in terms of pain and ill health and in money too. All this support is very expensive but each one of them is worth all the effort we put in. Surely it would benefit everybody if the voyeurs were uncovered and punished so forcefully that a clear message went out to people that supporting this trade in children will not be tolerated. If no one paid for this "service" it might not be worthwhile providing it. Thats probably a longer answer than you wanted but I hope I've given you a proper response.
Good answer.
What do you mean 5029 by 'If....' Haven't you even seen a single news report or documentary about the tragic fate of these children? Good grief, you must be living in a void. Sorry to be blunt 5029 but get a grip.
Bet you think I'm a pig now for picking at you. 5029. But my agenda isn't you, it's the disinformation you've spread in this 'thread'. Your question is nave and not of your usual calibre. True.

OK, maybe I should have phrased the question "Because the images that paedophiles download ...". Figure of speech xyz. By the way, whats my usual calibre?
Great contributor, 5029. You have to watch out for me, I'm a little bit whoo! - a little bit wheyy!

Rest assured, all the people indentified as downloading child porn off the Net WILL be visited and WILL possibly be arrested, in due time

The problem is simply a lack of money, from government, to trace all people, but the police will do so, in due course and theres no less than 250,000 more names to be investigated, so they'll be busy for many years

As for whether the images are real...Of course they're real, and taken both recently and years ago, and children have been removed in safety more recently, to prevent them from being abused and used on the net

How do I know?  I'm a survivor of sexual abuse and know that my pictures have been put on the net for these sick ******** to view!
