I keep getting shocks, sometimes up to twenty times a day, when touching items or even the children. It is becoming a problem. Can I wear anything that will prevent this happening, ie a wrist band etc. The added complication is I am allergic to latex rubber.

I don't have any solutions I'm afraid but you're not the only one. I've been getting them loads recently and so has a friend of mine so I think there may be something in the atmosphere, weather related maybe I don't really know. I touched the cat the other day and we both got a really big one - he leapt about a foot in the air!
The air is dry at the moment and this increases the prevalence of static shocks. When the air is more moist, you will not notice so many.
Moisture in the air allows electrons to move off your body more quickly and reducing the effects of a static 'shock'.
Touch a piece of wood furniture before reaching for the cat, children or metal objects. It should help.
Rubber gloves
The technicians at my work recommend cotton clothes and having bowls of water in the room
My shoes are the problem, black kinda rubber on the bottom. I get really bad shocks.
You are supposedly more prone to electric shocks when wearing synthetic fibres, so how about trying to wear more natural fibres?
Do you have nylon carpets? For some reason static electric carpets seem to generate them more than woollen carpeting.
I tell you what the carpets we have at work are a nitemare. Thats what we are blaming the prob on.

The worst is when you touch the photocopier - it nearly takes your whole arm off
..I too have been getting a lot of these recently, I work in a clothing department , my uniform is cotton, we have a tiled floor, but I do a lot of work involviong the removal of plastic from garments, swim wear is the worst!..everytime I touch a metal fixture or clothing rail , I;m off on a chain of around 50 little shocks in a row...ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch...

Don't have nylon carpets - they're probably the worst cause!

Also, you can get anti-static shoes, intended for use by electronics technicians. I believe these have conductive rubber soles, and they ground you.

Try searching the web for 'anti static'.
