Is it exactly a blessing for a blind person to gain sight.? Might they be severely disappointed to the point of depression and suicide and do you think this Is the case and more likely than unbounded exhilarated joy?

Did you just see At First Sight on BBC1? It was about a man gaining sight after a lifetime of blindness.

Well, I think that sight is only precious and missed after one has had it and then lost it. To those who have never seen, suddenly gaining the ability to see can be immensely disturbing, as they probably wouldnt know what they are looking at - a condition called Visual Agnosia. The extent of depression would depend on the individual's ability to deal with this change in his perceptions and the type of support he receives.

I think they would be exhilirated by the thought of being able to see, do things they have always wished too; more than the actual experience of sight.

Have you seen 'The Eye' about a blind woman who has an operation to restore her sight? Scary.
I agree with beenee. To never had sight means the brain has no ability to create images, one can only imagine what this life of darkness must be like especially if all other senses are intact. When we close our eyes and touch lets say a cup we know in our 'minds eye' what it looks like. what does a blind person 'see'? I remember watching a tv programme about regained sight.and this woman who could suddenly see was absolutely appaled and shocked with the huge protusion with holes hanging off peoples faces.....the humble nose to us. makes you think really dosn't it?
