Oily fish is good for the heart and joints...omega 3 oils ....
I am on a low fat diet at the moment for cholesterol and have been advised to eat oily fish ..but I buy the ones in brine.
They recommend on my diet sheet to eat three portions of oily fish a week.Olive oil is O.K ..much more healthy than vegatable oil for example but eating it on a daily basis in large amounts would, I think be fattening .I do have the fish in oil sometimes but drain it well ..you still get the nice taste of the oil ..which you can mop up with wholemeal bread. Yummy !!
I'm not sure about the weight gain but it would be unhealthy to eat alot of tuna due to the hugh mercury content. If you were to eat large amounts of it over a long period of time you'd probably be in trouble! I take it this is just a theoretical question...or do you really love fish?
Just to point out that tinned tuna is not classed as an oily fish. All the good omega 3 oils are removed during processing.
You need to keep a balance of omega 3 oils and omega 6 oils in your diet. Most of us consume far too much omega 6. Your body needs omega 3 fats!

Nothing wrong with olive oil, but avoid the cheap supermarket stuff. The cold pressed type is best and tinned fish loses most of its goodness thanks to food processing.

Buy fresh salmon, tuna and mackeral, but not the farmed stuff and avoid fish caught in inland waters due to the pollution. Marks and Spencers provides good information about the source of their fish.

Go to the gym if you gain weight.

shaneystar2, omega 3 oils can help reduce cholestoral but the only way to lower it is by doing excercise. Forget the benacol rubbish too!
Well boderectium thank you for your good advice ...if I wasn't so crippled up with osteoarthritis I would take more exercise. I manage to walk my large dog three times a day which is enough for me at my age and with dodgy knes and hips..also where did I mention Benacol in my post. Since I have been on my low fat diet ..recommended by my GP I have managed to lose five kilos so I must be doing something right.

Best type of exercise is good brisk walking or swimming. Like Shaney I suffer from arthritis and exercise is far from easy. Gyms are horrible boring places what a false environment to exercise in. People kept very fit before the 'Gym Culture' took over by walking instead of using the car. I would love to run and jump, etc., but it's impossible.

Good old porridge oats can help to reduce cholestoral if eaten daily.

Oily fish in tins is fine. We would all love to be able to eat the best fish possible, but our finances don't always allow it.
