I know I have a weeny hole in one of my back teeth as I saw the hygienist last weekend. I am not due to see the dentist until next weekend. I have nearly just gone through the roof with the pain when I bit on something, ironicly lettuce!!. In desparation I took one of my husband's Co-proximol tablets and gargled with his whisky!! Can anyone let me know how I can gain some relief until next weekend. Toothache is the worst pain!!

p.s. I hate the dentist with a passion, but anything is better than this pain.

Oil of cloves is the best natural remedy unless you want to spend the next week out of your tree on whisky!!

And yes, toothache is the worst pain in the world!!

I've seen these in a local chemist http://www.diy-dentist.com - luckily never had to try them so can't vouch for how good they are.
Ouch! I had a load of work done over a 2 month period last year. I had to make a decision between being sozzled for a week between visits or painkillers! The best I found were in Boots - own brand - called 'Dental Pain Relief' Tablets funnily enough!
They're very strong and quite expensive, c.5 for 12 I think but they really worked for me!
Think they contained Dihydrocoedine(sp) if that's any use?

PS They're over the counter, not off the shelf!
Adding to Jules001 post, I had that tooth fill stuff when I lost a filling and it does work. I found it on eBay (surprise surprise) and it lasted around 2 weeks before it started to disintigrate into little pieces, but it was enough for the tooth`s nerves to calm down and I haven`t had toothache in that tooth since.(5 months now).

Thank you all for your good suggestions. I must add that I did only gargle with the whisky and spat it out afterwards!! Good job my husband was at work as it was his best malt!!!! I wonder if whisky can still get into the bloodstream from merely gargling?

The bset treatment for toothache is obvioulsy to have the problem identified and repaired, not much help in your case at present.

The best painkillers (despite what anyone else teel you) are Ibuprofen and paracetamol unless of course there is some medical reason why you can't take them.

Cloves don't work, god knows people say they do

Alcohol has no topical effect analgesic effect (your better drinking it) gargling just increases your risk of developing oral cancer so I wouldn't recommend

Temporary fillings have their place, but long term they'll simply allow leakage and further infection and breakdown of the tooth.

To the person that has had a temporary filling for 5 months, I'd be suprised if the tooth didn't have secondary decay (given there's no way you could have removed it initially), and perhaps is even non-vital (dead) now and a potential source of infection

The best painkiller I have found for toothache, as long as you can take it and are not asthmatic is Ibuprofen, however if you do use this don't take anyother painkillers with it that contain aspirin.
Toothache usually refers to pain around the
teeth or jaws. The most common cause of
a toothache is a dental cavity and the
inflammation of the pulp(pulpitis) Sometimes
a toothache may be due to non-dental reasons like infection of the ears and sinus. If a tooth is affected
home remedies like clove oil can provide temporary
relief, but it is advisable to visit a dentist for a long
term solution. More information available at http://tinyurl.com/kqyrt
I have very bad tooth just now ive had it 5weeks now and cant get an appointment until next wednesday i think i need the thing pulled out ive tried nurofen, anadin ultra without no joy well it do ease the pain alittle, i had 2 pills from tesco last week witch i found laying around the house they did help sorry but i dont know the name of them they were red if that helps.
I had the same problem a while back, and it effected my working abilities due to no sleep.

I honestly can say the best thing to do is buy a pack on anadin extra (paracetamol) and also a pack of ibuprofen. Then you want to take 2 of the paracetamol and 2 of the ibuprofen and give it up to 20 mins the pain will go up to 4 hours.

and can be repeatedly taken every four hours also. depending on the pain at the worst should last for 3 and a half hours any less lasts for a while.

Hope this helps thanks.
