Has anyone any info on the Progesterone Only pill, i am currently on the combined pill, and i was asked at my recent trip to the doctors, hence previous question ! if i have any migranes, I have 2 a year at most with flashing lights, on telling her this she said that there is a direct link between having migranes on the combined pill & strokes ! she suggested that I should go on the PO pill to take away that risk as its the oestrogen thats the problem, can anyone tell me the advantages and disadvantages of the PO pill ? I've heard that you dont get as much water retention which I do have on the run up to my period and gain at least 3lbs, any info ?

Im on the PO and dont get water retention. I was put on it because i wanted the pill but am overweight. The only problem i have is remembering to take at the same time every day. Theres no break in between packets either. The only downside is i keep getting break-through where i spot every now and then during the month. My periods are almost non existant too (before they were 4-7 days of usual bleeding) but not sure if thats me or the pill!

Hi Tiger,

I can only give info from personal experience.

I had frequent headaches (& occasional migraines) with both the combined pill & the Progesterone only pill, so in the end I now have a coil.

I didn't notice any difference with water retention or PMT etc between taking the 2 types of pill, although I think it is the POP that is safe to take whilst breast-feeding.

Thanks both of u, my doctor did say that the periods while on these are significantly a lot less, so its not u....

Also Acorn did you know there is now a new pill called cerazette that now allows the 12 hour le-way for taking it...that was the one my doctor was going to put me on, and thats the one i would go for when i do go on because i also would find it very difficult to take it at the same time too...

I was on a progesterone only injection called Depo -provera. I was on it for 8 years and had no monthly period. I do take migraine though and three years ago the doctor took me off it to see if it would help with migraine but it didnt. I have subsequently had a baby so i had no lasting effects from it.

It lasts for 12 weeks from when you get it so Its good if you have a problem remembering when to take a pill.

Just from personal experience I had terrible acne on the PO pill. Bring on the male pill, thats what I say!!!

I have had both types - first the combined and later the progesterone-only pills. My migraine auras (which I had on the combined) also continued on the POP. The only thing that stopped them was stopping oral contraception completely and I haven't had one since.

Luckily my partner had the snip :-)
