I have posted this on the Food & Drink topics, but I'm not sure if I will get a reply.

Did anyone watch the Channel 4 Dispatches programme about What's in your Christmas Dinner? If you did, can you remember what it is that is harmful in mince pies?

I would appreciate any replies.

I did watch it and I seem to remember that they said 'what is the difference between a cheap mince pie and a Duchy one costing whatever' but then they never said what the difference was ..... I suppose in some mince pies there is animal fat, that is why I prefer the ones with the V symbol ... I would like to know too !
I think all you have to do is look in the ingredients and ask yourself if you want to put that in your body or not. Do remember that it's Christmas and only comes once a year!

lady p gold, that was about the christmas pudding.

the mince pies have a lot of 'trans fats' or 'hydrogonated fats' in them, in Denmark (or was it amsterdam) these fats are banned and yet we have guidelines stating we should eat no more than 5g a day. Basically, mince pies have quite a bit, and is often not clearly outlined on the packaging.

But i say, its only once a year! although i will never eat supermarket turkey again!

Hydrogenated vegetable oil. It is oil through which hydrogen in forced, like an industrial soda syphon, and it makes the oil go solid like lard. This is used in cheap cakes and pastry, but is bad for you because it furs up your atreties like highly saturated fats. Its tastes dreadful as well.

Manufacturers use it for cheapness. They don't care about our wellbeing, just their frofit margins!
