Acyclovir tablets aren’t working, neither is Zovirax. Recurring cold sores on lower back, very very itchy. Would rather have a cream than stronger Acyclovir tablets, help please!

sounds to me you would need a good strong prescription from doctor - sounds painful.
Zovirax and acyclovir are the same things with exactly the same ingredients.
Speak to your GP, she may be able to prescribe a different type of cream such as denavir which is not available over the counter
Think you have shingles. See GP as pain and itching can last a while. You need a complete course of medication if it is shingles
It does sound like cold sores rather than shingles.

See your GP as there are plenty of creams that are available.

None
there are none
it is too late ( early time limit has passed )
smurfy......if it is the itching that is bothering you, why not buy 1% hydrocortisone cream from the chemist and apply twice daily.
Question Author
Hi sqad, I have tried Tesco bite and sting cream 1% hydrocortisone, doesn’t seem to help, might try the aqueous calamine cream, or phone doctor tomorrow. Thanks all.
Can you get caladryl. Calamine with benadryl
Also try a bath with bicarbonate
I have had cold sores since I was a young girl. I had them several at a time on my lips and inside my nose. Nothing helped. Then I was told about lysine 500 mgs tablets. You can buy in Holland and Barrett. As soon as you feel the itch of one coming take 1000 mgs. The morning after take another 1000 mgs. I still get them and down below as well but they disappear almost right away. Give them a try what have you got to lose ? X

Tamaris, Lysine sounds interesting.. wonder if they interact with Simvastatin or Levothyroxine?? Sqad??
no interaction
try it and see

you re too late it has been known for around fifty years that if there is a rash then all the stuff does not work ( = doesnt shorten the duration)
Olds all have had herpes simplex

1970 we showed that 60% over 60 y of age had antibodies to simplex - showing old infection. I thought it should be more like 100%

lower BACK - are you sure this is H simplex ?
Smurf
This really does sound like shingles to me - my wife has just got over a bout of shingles on her forehead and around her left eye. She was prescribed Acyclovir tablets (can't remember the strength) and they cleared it up in 7 days. Please try and see you GP.

PP...../////.lower BACK - are you sure this is H simplex ?/////
No but clinical history would suggest so.

fbg40......shingles tends not tobe a reccuring issue which is the case with smurfy, plus the absence of pain is against diagnosis of shingles.
I dont think Herpes zoster ophthalmicus is what we are /should be talking about
AB retires hurt - anybody should look at the mess I make of eviction on the law thread
Point taken sqad ! Didn't read the post properly !
