I had a tooth extracted from the top right of my mouth (5 from middle). The removal of the tooth has left the usual crater in my gum. I am sure I can still feel tooth at the root when i put my tongue into the gum. Will this cause me grief when the gum heals? Should I contact my dentist again?

Go back to your dentist before infection sets in

My fellow is a dentist. I asked him and he said that it is possibly part of the bone - this can be revealed slightly when a tooth is extracted.

The worst scenario is a dry socket which is when, as it says, the crater dries out. That is flaming agony!!!!

Don't worry too much and DON'T prod at it!!! It will heal with time - just keep an eye on it and see the dentist if it becomes very painful.

I've had dry socket several times after extraction and have needed antibiotics and a dressing. Go back to your dentist. You have my sympathy, it can be extremely painful like lynneuk74 says!
I wouldn't worry to much about it as lynneuk74 says it could just be the jawbone which has come exposed. If you just keep rinsing your mouth with saltwater to keep it clean and if you are a smoker, keep the smoking to a minimum then you should be absolutely fine. The jawbone will eventually collapse together and cover up the hole.
Dentist? What they still exist! Still yet to find one of those for my family.

made an appointment for tuesday........thanks everyone.

Know what you mean traceymort - my boyfriend found NHS dentistry so stressful that he ended up having a breakdown. He now, luckily, has a job training dental nurses which he loves.

I am fortunate to be registered with an NHS dentist but have had a huge hole in one tooth for over 6 months now and haven't been able to get an appointment until March!!! Keep trying to persuade my boyfriend to come out of 'retirement' but he just says he is no longer registered or insured and doesn't have the necessary tools - for some reason he doesn't think my black and decker and some polyfilla will do!!!!!!!!

Sure you'll be ok 'cheap' but always better to get it checked out.
