Like many, many men, I'd been meaning to see my doctor for quite some time about the symptoms of an enlarged prostate but I never quite got around to doing it.
Then, one evening, I found that I constantly wanted to go to the loo but nothing would come out, so I stayed awake all night assuming that the problem would eventually clear itself. As I then did all day and all night after that. Eventually, after 11 full days with no food, no sleep and no peeing, I was in agony, unable to walk, with my lungs filling up with fluid and with my left leg massively swollen. At that point I gave in and called an ambulance.
I had a 5 night stay in hospital while they got some of my kidney function back. (The consultant said that my kidney response figures upon admission were the lowest that could be without me actually having totally zero function). They also helped to improve my lung function and to reduce the swelling in my leg. Since I came home I've been struggling quite a bit but today was my first almost 'normal' day, when I could go shopping without tiring myself out.
