For the last four days I have had an ulcer on the inside of my bottom lip which catches on my teeth, especially when eating. Thursday and Friday, I applied Bonjela to the ulcer and it eased off a little. This afternoon, I have that horrible tingly, 'cold sore coming' sensation on my bottom and top lip. I have now applied Zovirax.

Has the Bonjela activated the herpes simplex virus?

They do indeed Tilly and there are many other causes of mouth ulcers e.g.ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease and certain vitamin deficiencies, BUT viral causes are by far the commonest.

No idea.
My bet that the ulcer was viral from the start.

Do viruses cause ulcers in the mouth then Sqad? I had no idea.

Tilly, I have an ulcer in my mouth just below the lip and along the edges of my tongue (very sore) just now. I just assumed that I was run down and took some Paracetamol tablets.

I also blamed the weather and the cat :-)

Thank you, Sqad. Probably one and the same then.
Tilly goes viral ... this is an epic moment. You can do podcasts and become an Influencer.

Wolf, I always assume that I am run down when I have an ulcer...and when I have a cold sore. :-)

How do we get run up again?
Question Author
Give us a kiss, Jno!
I don't think that my body is capable of running anymore :-(

Can you walk?
Miserable for you Tilly. Unfortunately, just a matter of waiting for them to go. You could try a tonic to build your immune system up.
Chocolate and tomatoes give me mouth ulcers ....... not at the same time though !!! lol The dental hospital prescribed Doxycycline as a mouthwash for me ...... and it works. ;o)
Milk or yogurt helps get rid of ulcers.
When I get run down I get sores in the corners of my mouth, it took me years to find a dermatologist who finally diagnosed it as a vit B2 defiancy and within a day or two of taking a Vit B complex 3 times a day they disappeared. So now when I feel them coming I pop a pill and hey presto . But make sure the Vit 12 complex pills you buy include B2 ( Riblofavin) many don't.
Question Author
Did you get cold sores as well, Sam?
No Tilly, they are not cold sores ( Herpes Simplex ), but if I don't take the vit B2 they get very very sore and end up looking like them. Start as a slit right in the corner of my mouth, sometimes just one side, ( if I am not too stressed) but sometimes both sides at once.

Thank you, sam. I'm a marmite lover and there is Vitamin B in that. No cracks around my mouth, just two flippin' horrible, cold sores.
You need Vit B2 Tilly. Try it, can't do any harm except make your pee yellow and smelly !

I am pleased to read the info on this subject. I have a huge [for an ulcer] on my tongue, been there a week now and still very tender. Parts of the day it feels like my throat also has ulcers but just looks very red.

Its a month away from my next B12 injection so maybe thats why I have a sore mouth. I'm new to B12 deficiency.
