I bought some medicated mouthwash which had the word "cool" in the name, but I found that when I used it my mouth felt as if it was on fire. The effect was ( temporarily) quite painful and unpleasant.
Are there any gentle medicated mouthwashes which don't have this burning effect ? Are there any ingredients I should avoid ?

I am not an expert on mouthwashes atalanta, but i would guess that it is the alcohol content in the mouthwash that had caused your discomfort.

I use Dentalux which I think is Spanish but is sold by Lidl amongst others, the alcohol concentration being lower than most.

It is the alcohol that is the useful agent.

I think Sqad is right, apart from "straightforward" alcohol, many mouthwashes (and sweets) described as cool contain sugar alcohols such as xylitol or sorbitol. Funnily enough, I also use Dentalux mouthwash (the pale blue one) from Lidl, for the same reasons as Squad.
My mother always used to say to me that she would wash my mouth with soap.
Horrible it was
I find all mouthwashes like this, quite unpleasant. Listerine do some children's versions that might be milder.

Children's versions ! I never knew such things existed, but they seem an excellent idea. Thanks -I'll see if I can find some.
They also do an alcohol free mouthwash
Have a look at UltraDex. It was recommended by my dentist as I have the same problem as you atlanta.
It comes with a sachet of mint flavouring which you can add as much or as little of as you want, or none at all as its not necessary. It's colourless, flavourless and contains no alcohol.
Two points....Sqad's recommended Dentalux is ONLY available at Lidl, because it's a Lidl-owned brand-name.
Yes, you need to avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol if you don't want that "burning" sensation. The most widely available in the UK is Dentyl two-phase ...available Boots, Superdrug, most supermarkets. Some unusual flavours and no burning-sensation at all!

another tip Atlan - is why don't you water the mouthwash down a little - gets rid of the burning
