a big lump in the throat

ok my friend has this big lump in his throat and he says he got it 6 months ago and theres nothing to worry about..well he says he doesnt even want to eat because this emense pain that comes from it and he says its not in his throat its like between his muscles and his skin..but he gets light headed and tired hes not eating much..but he says hes got medicine for it but he had it 6 months ago and now its coming back..what is it? what would cause it?
