Hubby managed to embed a Stanley knife in his palm, then pull it straight out, went to the health centre which is the A & E as well. Three different practices and not one doctor was there, all on a training day. Is it just me that thinks they could at least stagger the training to make sure there are doctors available. Ended up having to travel 35 miles to get to a hospital.

If a Doctors car broke down and on ringing the AA was told ,sorry they're all training would he not say who's bright idea was that? (or words to that effect)

Well..........those 35miles were the most valuable he was likely to take.

GP in UK is an expensive luxury which the country can ill afford.
That is dreadful, I agree their training should be staggered. I hope he is alright after all that.
Firstly, ouch!

Secondly, not much point having a Health Centre/A&E unit which is not staffed.
Fairy...ouch! Hope he's okay....x

Sqad...if a GP is a luxury this country can't afford....why are they bothering with a training day? ;-) x
We don't stagger them because a lot of the training is 'shared' between Practices; each visiting others in turn or all, participating at a common venue.
Was he referred to a mental health clinic - self-harming can be a sign of serious problems.
gness...and why is the Government transferring £64billion to Primary Trusts?

Madness.
To put another case - OH woke this morning with a severe allergy rash; rang the surgery at 8.30 am, spoke to triage nurse, appointment at 11.50 am with doctor; down the chemist with script, and first Prednisolone dose at 12.30 pm. Good, eh?

He ended up in surgery to make sure there was no nerve damage, he was lucky just muscle damage. Could have been worse, but not impressed, the nurses were lovely but does seem a bit pointless no doctors, it wasn't even out of hours it was 3.00 in the afternoon.
fruigalfred.....good?.....that should be the NORM.
Madness indeed Sqad....but then my experience of the past year has almost brought me to the brink of madness with them...:-( x

He was fitting a carpet.
gness..LOL....

perhaps they were training in 'increased responsiveness to patient needs.
I had to wait two weeks for an appointment last time I wanted one...was better by then... self medicated !..but what if it had knock on consequences..?...when oh was delirious with ear infection I asked for home visit..even though he really could have struggled down..but couldn't wait that long for antibiotics....
OK...here is the difference which may explain it all..........

50 years ago medicine was a VOCATION.
Today it is a JOB.
Blimey fairycakes, hope hubby is ok? I would have been cross with that too. Fancy there not being a doctor for that very reason , to cover A/E !
Some of the 'old-school' toe GPs do exist, but very few I am afraid, and those tend to be the ones coming up for retirement. The changes I have seen over my 27 years of working for GP surgeries have been incredible. Not all for the good, maybe, but remember - not all for the bad either,
Toe GPs????
I meant style ....

I am not talking of those specialising in podiatry, stupid predictive...
It does sound mad to have an a&e with no doctors, what's the point of that? If they knew all the doctors were going to be away at once could they not have got a locum in? In my experience there are far too few doctors and nurses around today who went into medicine as a vocation. Some doctors I've come across don't even seem to like people never mind want to help them. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
