Isn't this just said by poor, boring and unimaginative people?

I was having a discussion with a neighbor who said this and i must admit i scoffed at hearing this bizarre phrase and scoffed further more when she said you can't put a price on the sunset, a babies laugh or the smell of cut grass on a summers evening.

I said imagine the sunset as you were on your 2.5 million yacht, imagine hearing a babies laugh as she and you flew to a holiday destination in your private jet and imagine the smell of cut grass on a summers evening as you stood on your balcony in your mansion overlooking your fleet of cars.

What are your thoughts? Oh btw i'm new here and my name's MR LOMAS, pleased to meet you.

It all depends on what you call the best things in life. I suppose that if you're living on a tight budget, a lovely sunset won't pay the food bill, so saying that the best things in life are free is OK for romantics. Btw, welcome to AnswerBank, MrLomas.
Well Lomas, I suppose it depends on whether or not you think the best things are material or not, I tend to agree with your neighbour and to my knowledge I've never been described as boring or lacking imagination and I'm not poor.
Taken from one of my favourite songs ever.....

"if I hadn't seen such riches I could live with being poor"
How very horrible of you, MrLomas. If you're that material, I don't expect you even notice the sunset or the smell of grass. The best things in life, the things which lift my spirits, don't me with a cash tag attached - I agree with your neighbour. Health, contentment, how do you cost that? Scoffing at someone's happiness with simple things in life just shows you up as being a very material person.
I must say that I do enjoy a lovely sunset, especially one where the sky looks as if it is on fire (haven't seen one of those lately) and a baby's smile is great as is its smell fresh from the bath. But I also like the things you have to pay for so I cannot subscribe to the saying the Best things in life are free! Some of them perhaps, but not all. Warm socks on cold feet are nice!! Welcome, MrLomas, hope you like it here.
If you were blind and couldn't see the sunset from your 2.5 million yacht, and your jet crashed killing your laughing baby whilst your mansion burned all your family you loved to death I don't think you'd be very well off even when the insurance paid out.
As bookbinder says, It all depends on what you call the best things in life. As you are helped to board your private jet because you are blind, knowing your wife can never have a child, might put a different perspective on the good things of life.
I agree with starone some of the best things in life are free.
And to care for a baby isn't free...and neither are lawnmowers! :)
Welcome to answer bank Mr lomas.....Lots of nice things in life are indeed free....but...spondoolies can make life more comfortable !!
I think that you may be unimaginative.

Someone very close to me is very ill and all the money in the world isnt going to make her better

The best thing in the world is your health

Money won't always buy that

I hope you're healthy - if so reflect that it's free and tell me what's better than that
Yes, on the whole, I would say the best things in life are free. You can`t buy health, friends, loved ones etc and when you are on your deathbed, you won`t be thinking about your yacht or your private jet - you will be thinking about the things that really matter. There are plenty of miserable millionaires in the world.
B00, that's one of my favourite song lines, along with "The pen is mightier than the sword, but no match for the gun!"
High 5 Sips! x
Starone,I've heard about SUNsets, forgotten what they look like.
If you were blind and could hear your baby laughing, and smell the newly mown grass , feel a wriggling puppy ,smell the freshly baked cakes then you might change your mind. Mr Lomas.
Mr Lomas, is your first name Hal?
