When someone inhales something, say for example, glue, poppers, aerosols etc why do you get a 'head rush' the chemical obviously affects the brain, but how? also when someone dies from 'sniffing' what do they actually die from? heart attack, brain shutting down?

A bit morbid i know but i'm just curious. Thanks

Scooby, I don't know what actually happens to the brain, chemically, but most deaths occur from suffocation or choking on vomit when unconscious.  Deaths have also been caused by heart failure and serious damage to the other main organs.

The substance that you sniff is taken into the lungs where it is very quickly absorbed into the bloodstream in the alveoli, in the same way that oxygen in the air is absorbed. Once in the blood it is carried to the brain.

Sudden Sniffing Death due to the induction of fatal cardiac arhythmia.
