Received our first Christmas card today - nothing too unusual, as this person always sends them early. What puzzled me was why they'd used a first class stamp. With 3 weeks to go, there was plenty of time for it too arrive. Some people obviously have money to throw away! If only......

I know what you mean...Like you say there is plenty of time.
I always send my post 2nd class unless it's urgent, stamps are so expensive these days, especially if you have a few xmas cards to send.
Some people's perception is that second class is far more likely to go astray, they being held in the postal system longer. Whether statistics support this I don't know.
I never ever even buy 2nd class stamps, maybe there are others like me.
losgigs, I always (without thinking) buy first class stamps for everything including Christmas cards. Next year, I must remember to buy 2nd class instead! lol

I agree, kitty. Luckily I bought loads of stamps before they went up in price in April, which helps with the cards this year.
Interesting theory , Canary. I just hope that people don't send vouchers/cash with cards unless well-disguised, eg in brown envelope. It's asking for trouble.
Possibly time to remind people of the Royal Mail Christmas stamp offer for anyone on Pension credit, ESA or incapacity benefit. Anyone in these categories can buy 36 1st class stamps at last years price , couples can buy 36 each.
You can get a voucher at the post office or log on to

I buy my 2nd classes in 100s once a year - saves faffing about with the PO queue at this time of year!
My default position is to buy 1st Class stamps.

I buy in bulk and receive a discount.
Prudie - I don't use 2nd at any other time than Christmas, otherwise I always use 1st
I've never bought 2nd class stamps before (perception is of a 3rd rate service) but I might do so this year.....if can get my act together in time.
It doesn't say so here, but I think you have to buy the stamps before a certain date http://www.dalecarnegie.co.uk/conflict_resolution/?keycode=google06uk.conflict&gclid=CISuvJyR_7MCFWbKtAodExAAZw
Dale Carnegie stamps? :-)
If you mean the Christmas stamp offer it is available until Christmas eve.
We posterd a card on Saturday afternoon 2nd class and the person received it first thing this morning (Monday) Why use 1st class

Good to hear that Royal Mail can be ultra-efficient occasionally, x-ray. Was the card delivered in the same town where you live?
Good job I'm using up my stock of black one penny Victorian stamps innit.

WR.
No - from Guildford in Surrey to the Isle of Wight
Well done Ron - got any left....probably not acceptable anyway
Any one else remember this? years ago my mum used to write ' Local' on the top of the envelope if the letter was for the same town . It was occasionally possible to post a letter in the morning and get it delivered the same day ( there were 2 delivery's a day then !)
