"If you are a retailer, you do not need to issue a VAT invoice or receipt unless your customer asks for one."

But for sales under £250 a simple VAT receipt is all that's required, which only has to include

the seller's name and address
the seller's VAT registration number
the time of supply (tax point)
a description of the goods or services

And no, you can't claim VAT back without a VAT receipt.
"And no, you can't claim VAT back without a VAT receipt."

You reckon?

That can't check everyone so 'many' people chance it.
Just don't give them any reason to pop in for audit.
Evian, a friend of mine, completely above board, self employed, has been checked 3 times. HMRC are a bit random.
Poor her! HMRC is my only phobia.
Not everything has VAT on it. For examples, stamps don't.
Ask the shop for a VAT reciept and if they refuse don't buy the goods
