Woman of 48 diagnosed with over active thyroid 4 months ago - is now on Carbimazole - last month was admitted to hospital with fluid on lungs - they drained 10 litres of fluid off her lungs. This week her lungs have filled with fluid again, not as bad - was taken to hospital last night, discharged today with meds.
She has also been suffering with constipation (no sure if this is relate).

She has an appointment at Barts in London on Tuesday.

Any thoughts ?

Yes,and all bad Den. Culture for cells and and bacteria should be a big help.

Two things spring immediately to mind a) lung cancer b) pneumonia (Bacterial or TB) There are other causes, but the above two are odds on favourites.

I would not expect her thyrotoxicosis to have anything to do with the fluid.

Interesting....keep me informed.
TOWIE....I have had another thought........IF her overactive thyroid was due to malignant disease of her thyroid with malignant "hot" secondaries in her lung, then that would fit perfectly,so ignore my penultimate paragraph of my post above.
No.........just noticed that she had Carbimazole.....that would rule out the diagnosis of thyroid cancer......getting old, should have thought of that sooner.

So we are back to my first post.

To be honest Sqad - I thought of thyroid cancer. At the time the hospital didn't know what was wrong with her - she had lost about 2 stone and was taken into Queens at Romford. Eventually they came up with overactive thyroid, but even since being on the meds, she hasn't been that well.

She doesn't smoke, but lives with a compulsive smoker. As far as I know she hasn't any other medical problems.
Thanks Den.....I await further posts with interest.

Update: The lady didn't have biopsy on Tuesday, but is booked in for next week to have a general when they are taking a rib away and a biopsy on lung and fluid.

Apparently she was also told they put talcum powder into lung to stop it leaking fluid - is this true ?
TOWIE........yepp! ..that is a well tried method of "plugging" the pleura following biopsy. The alternative is a type of glue. It will be to stop the leakage of air rather than fluid i suspect.

okey dokey, Sqad - it just sounded a little bizzare thinking of dusting Yarley April Violets into the lungs {:o/
