i had my ears pierced, 28 years ago and up until 5 years ago I regularly wore any type or earring without any problem.  Now if I put any in for even a minute (literally) the hole becomes sore and lumpy.  What can I do?

Try going back to plain gold sleepers and TCP, turning them when stuck.  Just like a new piercing.
yes, sounds like you've got an allergy to the metal. Mine do these with certain types but I haven't worked out what ones!!
I also get this, the reason is because I am allergic to Nickel. Stainless Steel jewellery and sometimes silver is mixed with Nickel, which triggers a reaction in some people. You are not born with this allergy, but it develops in some people over time and your body will start to reject nickel jewelllery. I agree with the other answer about the gold sleepers though, does the trick for me.
