It can be caused by anaemia, nerve pressure or blockage, artery block, inner ear problems, blood pressure.
There is a difference between the giddiness of inner ear problems and the fainting caused by  not enough oxygen getting to the brain.
I would suggest that you look under your bottom eyelids first to see if they are paler than they ought to be. They should be a darkish pink. If they are pale it means you are anaemic. This is easily fixed.

I haven't checked the link but quite often I get dizzy when I stand up due to postural hypotension - my blood pressure is normal, it just drops slightly when I get up and blood pools in my feet!

Do you get dizzy when you have just stood up?

druitaghtagh, no messing, to the doc now!! There are many things which cause this which are minor, but the few major ones are biggies
I went to the doctor today with a similar problem, I feel as if I am drunk and walk sideways like a crab, and feel nauseous. All vital signs were pronounced ok. Dr said I have an inner ear infection, she can't treat the infection but has given me tablets to control the nausea.
A visit to the doctor is called for...could be many things, including a blood sugar problem.
